Couples Therapy
You care about each other. So why is it sometimes so hard to feel close?
You sit down to talk about something that's been bothering you. One of you tries to explain why something hurt, but the other hears criticism. Now you're defending yourselves, bringing up things that happened last week, or wondering how this conversation got so far away from where it started.
Or maybe you've stopped having those conversations altogether. It's easier to let something go than risk another argument. But the things you don't talk about don't necessarily go away.
You might both be trying so hard to be good partners that there's little room to admit when you're hurt, disappointed, afraid, or unsure of what you need. And when one of you does try to open up, it doesn't always go the way you'd hoped.
You care about each other. You want things to be different. But you're not sure how to get there together.
What Brings Couples to Therapy?
Relationships bring together different needs, experiences, and expectations.
You may have different ideas about closeness and independence, struggle to make an important decision together, or disagree about parenting, family boundaries, or relationship agreements.
Some expectations come from your upbringing, religion, or the relationships you grew up watching. Others may have changed over time, leaving you to figure out what still fits and what you want to do differently.
How I Approach Couples Therapy
I'm interested in what happens between you, especially when you find yourselves responding to each other in ways that neither of you intended.
That means slowing down an argument and noticing how trying to be right can get in the way of feeling understood or connected. It means making room for a conversation you've been avoiding, exploring a difficult decision, or questioning assumptions you've taken for granted.
My role is to help you become more curious about yourselves and each other. That includes understanding your own reactions, making room for your partner's experience, and recognizing how the two of you affect one another.
My goal is to help you better understand what works for you, what doesn't, and how you might move forward together.
